Earthquake Drills at Child Care Centers?

Hello Mamas,

We would really appreciate hearing about earthquake drills at child care centers for infants.  Do you know if your baby's center conducts them and what they do?

(The recent drill at my baby's center did not seem safe and I'm trying to learn what is typically done and what is the best practice.)

Thank you!
Shaky Mama

Need Swing dance lessons

Hi,
My husband and I need a swing dance refresher lesson.  We know how to swing, but we just need a private coaching session or two before July 25 (yes, a wedding).  If you can help, we'd be grateful!

Seeking advice on OB/GYN in Portland

I'm looking for an OB/GYN to deliver my baby in Portland this fall and was wondering if I could get some recommendations.  I am looking for an OB that may follow or be familiar with the Bradley method, would follow my birthing plan pretty well, and someone who does not commonly give episiotomies.  Also, if there are any good Osteopathic OB/GYN's that practice manipulations  that would be great to know about too.  Thanks for your input!

Seeking Sunday Parkways Superheroes - July 19

DSC_0065 The July 19 Northeast Sunday Parkways event is just around the corner and once again we need volunteers.

Please send along a name(s) and contact information of someone (and/or yourself) that we can contact to help wave at thousands of happy walkers and bike riders and be an "Intersection Superhero" or a bike parking valet. Friends and family members are encouraged to volunteer together so forward this and have them join you in the fun. The 3 hour shifts still allow plenty of time to participate in the event (9am to 4pm).

Check out the event details on the attached program and website www.PortlandSundayParkways.org, including the third and final date this summer in SE Portland.

Direct questions to Janis.mcdonald@pdxtrans.org, volunteer coordindator or Rich.Cassidy@pdxtrans.org .

Amazing new kids' bookstore on Alberta

My daughters and I went to the opening of Green Bean Books on Alberta today.  I suppose I could be a bit biased because I do know the owner, but I think it's the children's librarian in me that left there wanting to make sure everyone with children or a classroom knows about it.  It is so awesome--it's a quaint little store and she has an incredible inventory, just a ton of really high-quality stuff.  It's a mix of new and used, and the used titles are so pristine it's hard to tell them from the new books.  She has a small selection of really wonderful toys and games, lots of things I've never seen anywhere else.  There is a finger puppet vending machine (puppets handmade by Jennifer), secret-disguise dispenser in the mystery section, secret book room with inexpensive staple-bound paperbacks, and a big deck out back with a hidden fairy-like reading spot under this tentish tree.  She gives 30% of the price she'd sell the book for if you have any good-quality used childrens books you want to sell for store credit.  There are parenting and teaching titles, too. My 4-yr-old made me promise to take her back without her toddler sister so we could curl up on the cozy couch to read for longer--she was really into it. They carry everything from board books to young adult books and even have a small section for books in other languages--a lot of other languages!   I am freaking out a bit about how wonderful it is, and I hope all of you have a chance to see it!!

Today was a 'soft' opening, so call before you go to make sure they're open.  I think she starts regular hours in a few weeks, and they're going to be open every day except Monday.  I think most days they open at 10 or 11 and close at 5 or 6.

Need a child-sized bike

I'm looking for a cheap used bike for my daughter - I think a 16" bike would be about the right size. Any color and style is fine, as long as it works, but pink and/or sparkly would be best.  If you've got a candidate, please contact me at ostling32 at gmail dot com.
